(Colossians 1:13-20)  “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.  For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities – all things were created through him and for him.  And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.  And he is the head of the body, the church.  He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.  For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things to himself, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

Can you imagine, when you really give your careful attention to the thought, of any  human standing in the place of God the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, as his substitute?  The Scripture above, should be sufficient alone, to show us that this is impossible.

Isaiah 42:8 declares: “I am the Lord; that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to carved idols.”  That should suffice to show us, most definitely, that no man can stand in the place of Jesus Christ and say, “I have ecclesiastical authority over people, as the vicar of Christ.”

The truth is this: Only God can stand in the place of God!  His glory, He gives “to no other.” It can’t be plainer than He makes it in His Word!  Jesus says of God the Holy Spirit in John 16:12,13 :  “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.  When the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you things to come.  He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.  All that the Father has is mine; therefore I have said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Therefore, the One who stands in Christ’s place, since Christ has ascended to the right hand of the Father, is the Holy Spirit, our Helper, our Comforter; and, the true Vicar of Jesus Christ.!  Christ is God the Son, and His glory He will not give to another.  But to God the Holy Spirit, He has given authority to stand in His place.  Would He give that authority to a human being?  Absolutely not!  God alone stands in the place of God.  Think of that!  “We have heard the joyful sound, Jesus saves, Jesus saves” (William Kirkpatrick). If you haven’t yet called on Jesus’ name, do so today!

With love, from a sinner saved by grace,
